About Our History...

PONCE DE LEON INLET POWER SQUADRON

Ponce de Leon Inlet Power Squadron began as a Division of Daytona Beach Power Squadron. The first organizational meeting was held at the New Smyrna Yacht Club on 15 December 1974 under the direction of D/C Burton H. Gilligan, AP, with D/Lt/C Charles G. Patterson, JN, D/Lt/C Francis D. Littlefield, SN, of the District Bridge. Daytona Beach Power Squadron was represented by Cdr Carl A. Meneley, N, Lt/C Harold N. Conley, S, Lt/C Harry J. Duffy, S, and P/C Nick L. Lacey, AP. The founding members did not want to be known as New Smyrna Power Squadron (or Division) since they felt that their operating area would be broader than that name indicated. Their first choice was Ponce Inlet Power Squadron, but this was not approved by the Rules Committee. Finally the name, Ponce de Leon Inlet Power Squadron, was approved and their Charter was granted, dated 16 December 1975. There were thirty-six Charter Members and Albert G. E. Brent, AP, was elected the first Commander.

With the organization and chartering of three new Squadrons during the year 1975, District 23 was then composed of twelve Squadrons.
